Lot Essay

Gould wrote 'The Kentish Plovers have longer legs and shorter toes' than the Ringed Plovers and 'For breeding the Ringed Plovers dispose themselves over shingly beaches and sides of rivers, while the Kentish Plover keeps to the sea-shore, and deposits its eggs above the high-water mark and out of reach of the spray.'

DISTRIBUTION: Almost cosmopolitan distribution, though the White-fronted Plover (Africa) and the Red-capped Plover (Australia) are sometimes separated as full species. Breeds irregularly and locally in Britain. Small numbers of passage visitors recorded
