Gould knew little about this extremely rare species but drew attention to its elegance, and the beautiful pencilled markings on the underside of its primaries (wings).

DISTRIBUTION: Breeds northern North America in north Alaska and northwest Canada. Winters in southern South America. Vagrant to Britain and in recent years seen annually, mainly in the autumn and chiefly in the southwest
