A GOLD CHAIN SALVAGED FROM THE 1622 WRECK OF THE NUESTRA
SEÑORA DE ATOCHA

Composed of alternately reeded and spirally fluted oval links in one continuous loop, 78.8cm. long, 125.59 grams, sold with original salvage certificate dated 1st September 1978

The Nuestra Señora de Atocha was one of twenty-eight galleons in the Tierra Firme treasure fleet that left Spain in March 1622 bound for the New World. Laden with treasure, their return journey was delayed till September when hurricane conditions struck off the Florida Keys. After initial salvage attempts the wrecks lay forgotten until
1963 when many artefacts, including some from the Atocha, started coming to the surface with the hull of the vessel being located in 1985. Cf. Gold and Silver of the Atocha and the Santa Margarita, Christie's, New York, 14 and 15 June 1988, lot 137
