This charming scene of ladies dressing for a party, humorously titled Arming for Conquest, reflects the Victorian love and nostalgia for the eighteenth century. The ladies in this scene are all dressed in elegant eighteenth century costume. This historical genre was typical in the Victorian period, a tradition that was popular in the 1840's with artists such as William Powell Frith, Charles Robert Leslie, Edward Mathew Ward as well as others.
Arming for Conquest was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1866. Bostock also exhibited at the British Institute, Old Watercolor Society and at the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street, between the period of 1826-1869.
