Lot Essay

The lithographs illustrate six poems by Lili von Braunbehrens: Der Kranke, Verbitterung, An eine alte Hose, Möbliert, Stadtnacht, and Trinklied.

Max Beckmann was very pleased with the result of this collaboration between Braunbehrens, the publisher Reinhard Piper and himself. In a letter from Beckmann to Piper dated 27 December 1920 the artist writes: 'Ich habe übrigens die Stadtnacht noch bei Zingler [Peter Zingler, art dealer in Frankfurt, who also published several of Beckmann's prints] gesehen und finde sie sehr gut. Sie konnte einfach nicht besser herausgebracht werden.' [Quoted from J. Hofmaier, Max Beckmann, Catalogue raisonné of his Prints, Gallery Kornfeld, Bern, 1990]
