Lot Essay

There is a related painting Junge Mutter (Blinde Mutter II) also from 1914 (J. Kallir, Egon Schiele: The Complete Works, M. Abrams, New York et al. 1990, nr. 273). The painting depicts a mother in the same pose as the present print (although in reverse) and with a suckling child.

During 1914 the artist was deeply involved with the subject of motherhood and half of the figural paintings of that year treat this theme. The year culminated with the birth of the artist's nephew, Anton Pescka, to his favourite sister Gertrude, who later received the painting Junge Mutter as a wedding gift
