Lot Essay

In 1923 Dix married Martha Koch, whom he had met in Dusseldorf in 1921. Mutzli, as he affectionately called her, was the model for 18 watercolours between 1922 and 1924. Martha Dix was drawn to extravagant clothing and in the portraits she is often seen wearing sophisticated hats, such as in the present work where it has become an important component of her silhouette.
