Karl Bernhard Wohlert has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work which he describes as a study for the oil Kartenspieler of 1936 now housed in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Other related works include another version executed at the same date now in a private German collection and a later version executed in 1945 housed in the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg.
