Lot Essay

This vessel matches the quality of the turquoise relief-moulded ewer in the Museo Nationale del Arte Orientale, Rome (Eredita del Islam, Arte Islamica in Italia, Exhibition Catalogue Venice, 1993-1994, pp. 225, no. 111) where the main field is decorated with a frieze of male dancers.

The figures on our vase are reminiscent of the Labours of the Month which occur on a number of bronze candlesticks produced in Siirt (D.S. Rice, "The Seasons and Labours of the Month in Islamic Art", Ars Orientalis , I, pp. 1-39). These too are placed in cusped arcades. The figures include a huntsman carrying a wild boar, a standing figure carrying a sheaf of corn, a mounted bowman and a figure holding a goblet.
