Lot Essay

The extraordinary hats worn by these two trumpeters may indicate that they are of Turkish origin. A similar example is seen on an early seventeenth century single figure study in the Austrian National Library (Duda, D.: Islamische Handschriften I - Persische Handschriften, Vienna 1983, Cod. Min. 44, fol.24 (no.51), Vol I p.255 and Vol II pl.542). Similar hats can also be found on minor figures in Turkish miniatures from the same period (Atasoy, N. and Çagman, F.: Turkish Miniature Painting, Istanbul 1974, pls. 37 and 46)
