Lot Essay

The service was clearly inspired by the vogue for the arts of Japan which was given impetus by the success of the Japanese displays at the International Exhibition in London in 1862. The 'bamboo' jug was registered in 1866; see Paul Atterbury and Maureen Batkin, (eds.), The Dictionary of Minton, Woodbridge, 1990, p. 341 for a page from the Minton pattern book illustrating this shape.
