Lot Essay

The boy is wearing traditional formal gowns and handmade cloth shoes. The sitters in this and the following lot were two of the first one hundred Chinese students sent to America in 1868 under Chen Nan-pin and Yung-Wan, for education as part of a project organised by Ulysses E. Grant to repay debts incurred by the Opium wars.
