Album containing forty-eight albumen prints, twenty-four hand-tinted, sizes approx. 8 x 10 in. to 8¾ x 11¾ in. or the reverse, mounted one-per-page, the majority accompanied by printed paper series lables with descriptive text on facing pages, the remainder titled in ink on mounts, signed Vernon Allen in ink on front blank, full maroon morocco, spine reinforced with leather straps, titled Japan and ruled in gilt, g.e., oblong 4to.

Twenty-four portrait studies including 'The Belle of Ogee'; 'Japanese Yakonin in Dress of Ceremony'; 'Kango bearers'; 'A social meal'; 'Mother and Child', four images of musicians, a samurai, a sake seller, three women out for a walk and the well-known image of a bettoe. Twenty-four landscapes, several with figures posed in the landscapes including a view of native town, Yokohama, several views of the temples at Shebra Yeddo, the Tokaido between Yokohama and Fujiyama, another interesting view of the Tokaido, a street scene in the village of Odawa, Hakoni Lake, view of the avenue at Hakoni, the baths at Tonosawa, Pappenberg, a street scene in the native town, Nagasaki.

Several of these images appear in Felice Beato's Views and Costumes of Japan in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
