Francis Frith became particularly well-known for his publications of photographs on Egypt, Palestine, Syria and Nubia. He set out for Egypt in 1856 and took his photographic van made of wicker-work with him including a tent-like cloth to protect the collodion plates from the hot climate during processing. Despite the difficult travelling conditions and extreme heat Frith succeeded in recording the many historic monuments of Cairo, Thebes, Karnak, Abu Simbel and Luxor. Certainly the best example of his work from these travels is the above mentioned series Egypt, Sinai and Palestine, which Helmut Gernsheim in the History of Photography (1969) describes as "The largest book with the biggest, unenlarged prints ever published..."
