Lewis Carrol mentions this portrait in his diary entry of 18th May 1874. On the 16th May, Henry Holiday, Dodgson's friend and the illustrator of 'The Hunting of the Snark', "arrived on a visit" and on the 18th "fetched Xie Kitchin to be photographed, and I did a large one full length, lying on a sofa in a long night-gown, which Holiday arranged - about the best I have ever done of her".
