Two albums containing approx. 197 albumen prints, six hand-tinted, including two two-part panoramas, each 8¼ x 22 in. (torn), other sizes approx. 3¾ x 5½ in. to 9½ x 11½ in. or the reverse, occasional numbers and titles in the negatives, variously mounted, morocco, ruled in gilt, 4to. (2)
Literature
The image of a Japanese girl balancing on her head is illustrated in Loti, Once upon a time, p. 71 and the image of Japanese men in a ferry on the river is illustrated in the same book, p. 98 where attributed to Felice Beato. The image of the Japanese man dining in western dress can be compared to a similar image in Worswick, Japan Photographs 1854-1905, p. 46 (illus.)

Lot Essay

One album contains several views around 'Chefoo', China including two panoramas, a view of 'Palamipur', India, the Suez Canal and views in Italy and France. Also included is a group portrait of Japanese women at a dinner party, a Japanese man eating, a Japanese man in western dress dining western-style and two group portraits of the officers and lieutenents of H.M.S. Bellesophou dated 1876. The other album relates to Japan and contains several portrait studies and landscapes. Views around Nagasaki including two two-part panoramas mounted on two pages, each approx. 6¼ x 16 in., several views around Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto, Fujiyama, Yokohama, the waterfalls at Nikko and Tokyo. Several interesting portrait studies of labourers, a blind man, women in the kango, a group portrait of 'Daimis and his wives', men in a ferry along the Tokaido and a group portrait of women at their toilet.
