Lot Essay

A pair of candlesticks of exactly the same model was formerly in the château du Champ de Bataille, while a further pair, enriched with Louis XV feet stamped with the C couronné poinçon, was sold from the collection of M. Hubert de Givenchy, Christie's Monaco, 4 December 1993, lot 12

It is interesting to note that a further pair of candlesticks of this model appear in a photograph of Sybil, Marchioness of Cholmondeley's Drawing Room at 12 Kensington Palace Gardens, W.8. (illustrated in M. Girouard, 'Gilded Preserves for the Rich Kensington Palace Gardens-II', Country Life, 18 November 1971, p. 1362, fig. 4)
