Lot Essay

These stoneware figures are visible in both the interior area 1923 of the Large Drawing Room by E. Shepherd and in Sir John Lavery's picture of the room 'The Red Hat', dated 1925. They stood on the Boulle cabinet des médailles which Sir Philip had inherited from his grandparents Baron and Baronne Gustave de Rothschild. It was sold in these Rooms 12 April 1984, lot 164 and is now in the J. Paul Getty Museum
