AN ITALIAN GLAIVE with large cleaver-shaped blade with convex main edge (heavily rust patinated, perhaps repaired), back-edged towards the point with, at the bottom, a small projecting formed as the outline of a dolphin's head, in the centre of the back a slender upward curving crescent spike, the base with two side-spikes, tapering socket of flattened octagonal section with prominent cushion moulding at the top, and traces of an engraved coat-of-arms on one side, later side-straps, and later wooden staff partly covered with red velvet, late 16th Century
