A FRENCH SMALL-SWORD, the tapering blade of flattened hexagonal section with wide fuller on each face of the forte, one with a running wolf mark, the iron hilt comprising oval side-ring, knuckle-guard and short lobe-shaped rear quillon (replaced), all of flat section, and fig-shaped pommel of incurved hexagonal section, counterfeit-damascened in gold throughout with conventional foliage, bunches of fruit and grotesque masks involving oval cartouches framing equestrian figures, battle scenes and landscapes against a russet ground, and iron and brass wire-bound wooden grip, circa 1645-65
