A RARE EAST EUROPEAN SABRE (KARABELLA) with curved single-edged blade double-edged at the point and bordered along the back on each face by alternate wide and narrow fullers, the ricasso cut on one side with the mark of a lion rampant, the hilt with brass crossguard comprising quillons with facetted ball tips and tapering langets, finely engraved on each face with a multi-petalled flower framed by foliated scrollwork all against a fishroe ground, and beaked handle with wooden grips carved with chevrons in low relief, each with three silver rosette studs and engraved silver band (incomplete) between, in leather-covered wooden scabbard (slight damage) tooled with design of longitudinal recessed bands with shaped ends, with brass mounts comprising deep locket and chape and two narrow bands with suspension rings (one band repaired, ring missing), and decorated en suite with the crossguard, 17th Century, Polish or Turkish
