This belongs to the famous garniture in the Real Armería, Madrid (No. A 243-62), and was probably removed from the armoury during the theft of 1838, when many pieces disappeared and were offered in the two Christie's sales of 1839 and 1840 (which do not include this shield). It was eventually acquired by François Buttin, then passed to Clarence H. Mackay. A.R. Dufty acquired it at the Mackay sale at Christie's on 27 July, 1939, lot 55 (22 gns)

For the attribution of the garniture to Großschedel see Alexander Freiherr von Reitzenstein, 'Die Landshuter Plattner Wolfgang and Franz Großschedel', Münchner Jahrbuch der bildenden Kunst, 3S., V, 1954, pp. 142-53
