Despite the initial C on the escutcheon, this pistol almost certainly belonged to The Hon. George Wrottesley of the Royal Engineers, who became 2nd Lieutenant in December 1845, 1st Lieutenant in April 1846, Captain in December 1845, Lt.-Col. in November 1868, and Beret Colonel in November 1873. In 1872 he was Commanding Royal Engineers, Gravesend: in 1876 Commanding Royal Engineers, Woolwich, and Major General in July 1881. He retired in 1882
