AN UNUSUAL PAIR OF SMALL FLINTLOCK PISTOLS with rebrowned twist octagonal barrels signed in gold and with silver fore-sights, patent recessed breeches each with back-sight, two gold lines, and platinum-lined touch-hole, engraved tangs, engraved bevelled locks each inscribed 'Joseph Egg Patent' and fitted with roller, swept rainproof pan clear of the touch-hole, and small safety-catch (one replaced), the steels engraved 'Jos.h Egg Patent' and numbered 2150 and 2151 respectively, figured walnut full stocks, engraved silver mounts including spurred pommels engraved with a crest and motto, iron trigger-plates each with pineapple finial, silver escutcheons engraved with initials JM, silver barrel-bolt escutcheons, horn fore-end caps, and horn-tipped ramrods: in original fitted mahogany case lined in blued velvet (central partition missing) with accessories, the lid with trade label and flush-fitting carrying handle, the escutcheon plate engraved with the same crest, motto, and initials as the pistols, by Joseph Egg, London, each barrel numbered 2151, London silver hallmarks for 1815, maker's mark of Moses Brent 6¾in.

The crest is that of Maud

A pair of Joseph Egg pistols with similar pans set clear of the touch-holes was sold in these Rooms, 15 June, 1977, lot 142. The purpose of these pans is not clear, but it has been suggested that they were intended for special priming powder
