Oval, the centre with a celestial depiction of day and night, the warrior God striding into Night and bordered by the twelve signs of the Zodiac, surrounded by twleve scenes from the legend and with an outer band of green waves, in yellow borders, signed at one end - 10¼in. (26.3cm.) long

Lot Essay

The shield is described in Homer's Iliad, chapter 10.

The plaque is offered for sale together with the velvet-lined tooled leather case, with glazed intrior, which originally housed the collection and a letter from a Mr. Evans to a prospective purchaser on behalf of the owner, suggesting a figure of 300gns for a selectin of micro-mosaics including the Shield of Achilles.
