A NORWEGIAN SILVER PEG TANKARD
maker's mark HM only, circa 1680

Cylindrical and on three pomegranate feet chased above with foliage, the beaded scroll handle applied with horned and winged grotesque masks, the hinged domed cover chased with foliage and with pomegranate thumbpiece, engraved on the cover with names and date 1682 and beneath the base with further inscription, marked on base - 6¾in. (17cm.) high

A tankard with similar applied masks to the handle, made in Stromso, circa 1680, is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum and illustrated in R. W. Lightbown, Catalogue of Scandinavian and Baltic Silver, London, 1975, no. 35
