JONSON, Ben (1572/3-1637). The Workes. London: William Stansby, 1616 [vol. I] and Richard Meighen, 1640 [vol. II].
2 volumes, 2o (284 x 179 mm [vol. I]; 288 x 184 mm [vol. II]). Engraved title by William Hole (Pforzheimer state C) in first volume (outer margin renewed, a few minor repairs). (Vol. I: last leaf repaired with pagination lost, a few marginal repairs and small stains, lacking first blank \\h\\h1; Vol. II: gutter margin on title renewed, minor worming on approximately 50 leaves at beginning occasionally affecting letters, single wormhole penetrating approximately 130 leaves at end touching a few catchwords). Light brown morocco gilt, edges gilt, by Riviere (joints on vol. I a little worn).
Provenance: JOHN DRINKWATER (1882-1937), poet and playwright (his bookplate, signature and bibliograhical note in each volume) -- Louis H. Silver (bookplate), sold in the sale of Newberry Library duplicates from the Silver accession, Sotheby's London, 8 November 1965, lot 178.
A VERY GOOD COPY OF THE FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. "Jonson began the preparation of this definitive edition in 1612. He used the quarto texts wherever available but scrupulously and systematically revised them, cutting out many marginal notes, altering the spelling, typography, and punctuation in accordance with a consistent if somewhat pedantic plan and introducing considerable editorial matter. The result is that this folio edition may be regarded as authoritative" (Pforzheimer). Pforzheimer 559, 560; STC 14751, 14754. (2)
