FIRST EDITION. Smollett's second and longest novel deals with the vice of pride in all its manifestations. On the grand tour, Peregrine shows enough Francophobia and general insolence to suffer imprisonment in the Bastille, and there is much heavy satire on foreign manners. When the hero returns to England, his degredation continues, and not until he is imprisoned a second time is there any sign of repentance. Lady Vane's scandalous and erotic memoirs are interpolated, but her life of pleasure and debauchery is not irrelevant to the hero's own. Savage caricatures are included of, among others, Fielding as Mr. Spondy, Garrick as Marmozet, and Akenside as the Doctor. The second edition of 1758 was revised and modified in tone. Rothschild 1910. (4)
