SPINOZA, Baruch (later Benedictus de, 1632-77). Opera posthuma. [Edited by Jarig Jellis, his long preface translated from Dutch into Latin by Lodewijck Meijer. Amsterdam: Jan Rieuwertsz], 1677.
Ordinary 4o (197 x 151 mm). Collation: *-*****4 (general title, preface, divisional title to the Ethics); A-Z Aa-Kk4 (Ethica); Ll-Zz Aaa-Ccc4 (Tractatus Politicus and De intellectus emendatione); Ddd-Zzz Aaaa-Mmmm4 (Epistolae and index, Mmmm4r divisional title to the Hebrew grammar, Mmmm4v Admonitio ad Lectorem); 2A-2P4 (Compendium grammatices linguae Hebraeae, indices and errata). 404 leaves. Roman, italic and hebrew types. Woodcut title-vignette, initials and illustrations.
BINDING by Luc-Antoine Boyet (d. 1733): early-18th-century Parisian gold-tooled red morocco for CHARLES-HENRI, COMTE D'HOYM (d. 1736), his arms in the center of both covers (Olivier 672.1), the crowned eagle of Poland repeated on spine (Olivier 672.2), triple fillets on sides and in compartments of the spine, double fillet on board edges, turn-ins roll-tooled, comb-marbled endpapers, gilt and marbled leaf edges. Provenance: Count Hoym (binding), plenipotentiary of August II, elector of Saxony and King of Poland, to the French Court. The Spinoza was apparently not included in the catalogue of his auction sale, organized at Paris by Gabriel and Claude Martin in 1738 -- Robert S. Turner (gilt morocco bookplate, Paris sale 1882, Adolphe Labitte, lot 112, to) -- [Morgand, Parisian booksellers, their Bulletin I, no. 4479] -- purchased from Bernard Quaritch, London, 29 September 1982.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, of all texts including Ethics, Spinoza's most important and influential philosophical work. The modern classic of pantheism, it argues that God is the immanent principle of the universe, undetermined or infinitely self-determined. Spinoza's thinking combined religion and science in a revolutionary way, unpopular with both Jewish and Christian orthodoxy. His views greatly influenced German Romanticism, Herder, Schelling and Hegel. The Tractatus politicus is quite a different text from Tractatus theologico-politicus, which had appeared during his lifetime in 1670. The correspondence forms a more accessible introduction to Spinoza's philosophy and Cartesianism, but also deals with his work on optics and the telescope.
A later engraved portrait of the author is sometimes found added to the book; in fact, enough copies in 17th-century bindings containing it survive to postulate a second issue. Count Hoym was one of the greatest bibliophiles of the 18th century, whose taste in collecting was as wide as it was subtle. VERY FINE COPY, rare in morocco. Kingma and Offenberg 15.
