Woodcut title device, woodcut portrait of Erasmus on *8r, further woodcut on **5v, woodcut initials. (L1-2 spotted, without final [?]blank R6.) Early 19th-century red morocco, gilt-lettered spine with raised bands, by C. Smith (spine rubbed and chipped at foot). Provenance: WILLIAM BECKFORD (1760-1844, with 6-line inscription in Beckford's hand on verso of rear free endpaper), sold in the Hamilton Palace Sale, Sotheby's, London, 12th July 1882, lot 2858 -- purchased from Scribner Rare Books, New York, 5 December 1972.

WILLIAM BECKFORD'S COPY. His charming inscription reads: "Most strenuosuly do I recommend 'The Young Man's' acquaintance with the writings of Erasmus, full of sweetness of temper, of playfulness of wit, liberality of sentiment, and variety and importance of information, clothed withal in the style of pure and fluent latinity, such as has never been surpassed by later writers." The life was first published at Leyden in 1607.
