FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of this classic American autobiography, imperfectly translated from the Mémoires de la Vie Privée (Paris, 1791) and adding a spurious continuation, new anecdotal material and a eulogy by Fauchet. Franklin began the account for his son in 1771, but set it aside; the first portion was published in French in an unauthorized edition by Buisson. Franklin's original manuscript, believed to have been lost, resurfaced in 1818 in the possession of Franklin's grandson, William Temple Franklin.
