GAY, John (1685-1732). Trivia: or, The Art of Walking the Streets of London. London: Bernard Lintott, [1716]. 8o (188 x 113 mm). Engraved title device. (Title and a few leaves apparently supplied, A2 advertisement leaf bound at end.) Panelled calf, spine gilt in 18th-century style, edges gilt, by Ramage (joints and corners rubbed). Provenance: Arthur B. Spingarn (bookplate by Ruth Reeves) -- [Francis Edwards, Marylebone, 12 March, 1932 (note of purchase on rear free endpaper)]. Exhibited: Grolier Club, 'This powerfull rime,' 1975, no. 33. FIRST EDITION of Gay's great "low life" poem. Lintott paid the poet the large sum of forty guineas for the copyright, but the Countess of Winchelsea reputedly told him that it made him fitter to walk before a chair than to ride in one. 2000 ordinary and 250 large paper copies were printed.
