4o in half-sheets (259 x 201 mm). Half-title; Engraved vignette portrait of the author on title. (Some very minor pale spotting.) Modern half morocco. Provenance: Mrs. Walsingham (signature on half-title, and possibly her few corrections to the text from the errata) -- purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, New York, 21 October 1969.

FIRST EDITION, early issue with five of the six errors listed in the errata uncorrected by printer, and containing another error not noted (page 10, line 9 "left" for "lost"). The title is in the state which includes the words "Published as the Act directs 18th April 1774" below the portrait, and it contains the 4-page 'Explanatory Notes and Observations' at end (which Scott says "all first issues of the first edition should include"--p. 324).
