Holmes discusses a relative in the South: "It would have been strange if he and my boy had met on the battle field, when my O.W.H. Jr... managed to pick up five bullet-holes, and is none the worse for any of them." He mentions that he is glad the recipient likes his books, and forwards a SIGNED CARTE-DE-VISITE PHOTOGRAPH (included), signed by Holmes ("Oliver Wendell Holmes"). Also with an engraved portrait of Holmes.
