4o (189 x 130 mm). Black letter. Title with woodcut vignette. C4 with woodcuts of grafting tools on recto, blank on verso. Four other woodcut illustrations, diagram at head of N4v, woodcut historiated and decorated initials, typographical tail-pieces, publisher's device on colophon leaf (McKerrow 205). (Title rather soiled and with old crease marks, blank verso of final leaf also soiled.) Panelled calf, red morocco lettering-pieces, edges gilt, by Sangorski and Sutcliffe for Brentano's (upper cover rehinged). Provenance: purchased from Scribner Rare Books, New York, 6 October 1969.

Fourth edition. Mascall helped to establish the pippin apple in the orchard of his home in Sussex. The first edition of his popular treatise was published in 1569, and was really a translation from the French of D. Brossard. Henrey I, 18; STC 17576, locating only 5 copies of the fourth edition.
