4o (181 x 134 mm). Title printed in red and black, initial blank [A]1 present. (Some slight marginal browning, lower corner chipped on E2, printer's error affecting two words on H2, tear crossing text repaired on Gg4, occasional light spotting.) Modern crimson morocco gilt, covers panelled in gilt and blind, edges gilt, by Riviere. Provenance: early manuscript corrections of errors on pp. 42, 53, 112 and 179 (same as those in the Houghton copy) -- purchased from Scribner Rare Books, New York, 23 January 1969.
FIRST EDITION. Milton was commissioned by the Council of State to write this response to the popular Eikon Basilike of the same year (see lot 174). "After the Restoration this book, together with his Defensio Pro Populo Anglicano, was ordered by the House of Commons, 16th June 1660, to be burnt by the common hangman" (Pforzheimer). Parker suggests that Andrew Marvell may have assisted Milton in the writing of this work due to his blindness (p. 964).
