PHILIPS, John (1631-1709). Cyder. A Poem. In Two Books. London: for Jacob Tonson, 1708.
8o (196 x 116 mm). Engraved frontispiece by Van der Gucht, engraved head-pieces and initials. Contemporary English panelled calf (slightest worm damage on front cover, head of spine chipped); quarter calf slipcase. Provenance: purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, New York, 17 April 1969.
FIRST EDITION, on ordinary paper, with all of Williams's readings in sheet D for that issue. Williams concludes that the ordinary paper copies were issued first, based on the prevalence of misprints that are found corrected in the large-paper copies. Rothschild notes, however, that large-paper copies are found similarly set, and that "no distinction can be made between large-paper and ordinary copies. Moreover, the frontispiece was designed to suit the large-paper copies." Cyder is written in imitation of Virgil's Georgics and celebrates the cultivation of cider apples and the manufacture and virtues of cider. Foxon P238; Hayward 143; Rothschild 1534; Williams Points in Eighteenth-Century Verse, pp.92-3. A VERY FINE COPY.
