ROWLANDSON, Thomas (illustrator). Real Life in London; or, the Rambles and Adventures of Bob Tallyho, Esq. and his Cousin, the Hon. Tom Dashall, through the Metropolis. London: B. Bensley for Jones & Co., 1821-22.
2 volumes, 8o (222 x 138 mm). Two hand-colored frontispieces, two hand-colored titles and 30 plates by and after Thomas Rowlandson, Henry Alken, William Heath, and others, including the optional plate "Tom and Bob Catching a Charley Napping." (Inner margin of title in vol. I renewed, a few small marginal repairs.) 20th-century red morocco gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut, original wrapper to the ninth edition bound in at end of volume one, by Riviere (joints slightly rubbed). Provenance: Gustavia A. Senff (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, mixed issue. This work is one of several imitations of Pierce Egan's immensely popular Real Life in London; or, the Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorne, Esq. and his elegant friend Corinthian Tom, also of 1821 and illustrated by George Cruikshank. "From a bibliographical point of view, one of the most complicated and bewildering books ever published... A difficult feature of the book is that two printers, Bensley and Applegath, printed copies, textually the same page by page, with only minor variations in the settings, and this, coupled with the fact that during the eight or nine years it was being printed, makes the whole vast output all 'first editions,' but with innumerable states and variants that constantly overlap one with the other" (Abbey Life 280); Tooley 198.
