4o (182 x 148 mm). Title-page printed in red and black. (Title soiled and frayed slightly at edges, lower corner of b3 torn away, a few small rust-holes touching a few letters, a few pale stains, some worming in gutter and upper margins.) Contemporary English limp vellum (recased, front hinge cracked). Provenance: notes in two early hands on margin of A2 and inner back cover -- Robert Plum of Yelden (ex dono inscription on rear flyleaf dated 1653, presenting the volume to) -- Thomas Witham of Witham -- purchased from Harry L. Stern, Chicago, 24 August 1979.

FIRST EXTANT EDITION of four dated 1618. The absence of a printer's name and the place of publication reveal Selden's anticipation of an unfavorable reaction. His denial of the divine right of tithes indeed met with harsh criticism, giving great offense to the clergy. The work was refuted in numerous volumes, to which Selden was forbidden to reply. The printer's note at end indicates that there was an earlier edition, perhaps privately published: "As I found the Copie partly Printed partly Writen, so is this done off." No copy of an earlier edition has been located. Pforzheimer 857; STC 22172.
