SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe. The Masque of Anarchy. A Poem. Preface by Leigh Hunt. London: Bradbury and Evans for Edward Moxon, 1832.
12o (172 x 103 mm). Half-title. (A few leaves roughly opened with some marginal soiling.) Original blue-grey boards (rebacked); quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: a few pencilled marginalia -- purchased from Scribner Rare Books, New York, 29 January 1969.
FIRST EDITION of Shelley's response to the Peterloo affair (the so-called "Manchester Massacre") of 1819. The text includes a prefatory sketch of Shelley by Leigh Hunt, to whom Shelley had sent the manuscript in 1819 for publication in The Examiner. Hunt withheld it from publication because he "thought that the public at large had not become sufficiently discerning to do justice to the sincerity and kind-heartedness of the spirit that walked in this flaming robe of verse." Ashley V, p.89; Granniss/Grolier Shelley 80; Tinker 1905; Wise Shelley, p.71.
