8o (160 x 105 mm). With blank leaves (f)4 and L4, engraved portrait of the author inlaid to size inserted facing title. (Stain on M2, page numerals punched out on (c)6, tiny holes in G1 and N3, a few headlines shaved slightly, a few pale marginal dampstains, some minor marginal soiling.) Early 19th-century calf gilt, spine gilt (front joint renewed); quarter morocco folding case. Provenance: Isaac Reed (1742-1807), editor of Shakespeare (signature [shaved] on A1 dated 1778) -- Louis H. Silver (bookplate), sold in the sale of Newberry Library duplicates from the Silver accession, Sotheby's, London, 9 November 1965, lot 329 -- purchased form Seven Gables Bookshop, New York, 1 March 1971. Exhibited: Grolier Club, 'This powerfull rime,' 1975, no. 20.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. "It is believed that the copies without the publisher's name, and with the imprint 'Printed in the Year, 1651' were a private issue, and presented by the author to his friends" (Wither to Prior). Hayward states that only fifty copies of this issue were printed. The regular issue has publisher's name "Humphrey Moseley" and date 1652.
