Late 16th-century German blind-stamped pigskin over boards, dated '1598' in gilt on upper cover (owners initials erased from upper cover). Provenance: [?]'HM' (initials on title page) -- purchased from Patrick King, 1994.
FIRST ALDINE EDITION, largely based on Beatus Rhenanus's edition published at Basel in 1533. Tacitus was relatively unknown during the Middle Ages. Several of his manuscripts survived only in single copies. The first edition of Tacitus works was printed in Venice, 1473. This and consecutive editions "... exercised great influence on Renaissance historians." (PMM 93). A large copy in a near contemporary German binding.
