AUGUSTINUS, Aurelius (354-430, Saint). De civitate Dei. Venice: Nicolaus Jenson, 2nd October 1475.
Chancery 2o (285 x 200mm). Collation: [1-28] (chapter table, 1/1 and 2/8 blank); [3-3110] (text, 31/8v colophon, 31/9-10 blank). 305 leaves (without final blank). Gothic type 2:84 (text), Roman type 4:110 (headlines). 46 lines and headline, double column. Rubricated: initials and paragraph-marks in alternate red and blue. (First text-leaf 3/1 and sheet 29/3.8 supplied from other copies, sheet 10/1.10 misbound between 9/5.6, occasional light dampstaining.)
Binding: contemporary Venetian blind-tooled maroon goatskin over wooden boards, the sides panelled with multiple fillets and border of floral and cable tools, large knotwork tool repeated in central compartment, compartments of spine diapered, original headbands and pastedowns, (some defects to covers and spine, clasps removed). Quater-morocco box. Provenance: Venice, Seminary, gift from its founder Giovanni Battista Contarini 1st January 1583 (inscription), with early marginal notes -- Dr John Gott, Rome 1865 (inscription), 1830-1906, Bishop of Truro, Shakespeare collector -- purchased from Marshall Field's, Chicago, 17 June 1985.
Second Venetian edition of the most influential early Christian text, of equal importance to Medieval and Renaissance thought. Luther, Calvin, Voltaire, Vico, Maritain, Niebuhr and numerous other theologians and philosophers were inspired by it. Not unlike the Bible, it has been mined to support opposing views of theology, history, politics and philosophy. It went through dozens of editions in the 15th century and was one of the first texts printed in Italy. HC *2051; GW 2879; BMC V, 175; IGI 992; Goff A-1235.
