Collation: A4 (1r xylographic title, 1v presentation woodcut within border, 2r-3v author's dedication to Beatrice of Aragon, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, widow of Matthias Corvinus, with her woodcut portrait, 4r-v index of names); a-e8 f6 g-p8 q-x6.8 y-z6 (a1r table of women's deeds and inventions, a1v woodcut of scenes in the life of the Virgin, within border, a2r (within border)-z5v text and woodcut portraits, z6r colophon, quire register and printer's woodcut device C [Kristeller 38], z6v blank). 176 leaves. Gothic types 4:105 (text), 1:81 and 2:63 (index and marginalia), roman type 5:105 (foliation). 45 lines and headline, and foliation on rectos. The 2 large illustrations (150 x 105mm) cut to fit within the same architectural and historiated border 2a (signed S and dated 1493), another woodcut border (3a) around the first page of text, 56 woodblocks (65 x c. 72mm) printed by repetition to form 172 PORTRAITS OF FAMOUS WOMEN in a variety of landscapes; 8-line woodcut historiated initial M of the Virgin and Child (BMC set 3), numerous white-on-black 4-line initials from woodcut set 2. (Woodcut borders shaved at foot.) 18th-century English calf, gilt roll on board edges and turn-ins, gilt edges, marbled endpapers (rebacked, original gilt spine and lettering piece laid down). FIRST EDITION, A CLASSIC OF ITALIAN RENAISSANCE BOOK ILLUSTRATION. All woodcut material appears in this edition for the first time. No artist has been identified, but more than one Ferrarese hand is likely to have been responsible for the portraits; they show both Florentine and Venetian influence. Seven woodcut portraits of contemporary Italian women are not repeated and are thought to be genuine likenesses, including Bianca Maria Sforza, Catherina countess of Forlì and Imola, Leonora of Aragon (wife of Ercole d'Este), Danisella Trivulzia and Cassandra Fidelis. The outline architectural borders of putti with musical instruments, griffins, etc. are in the Venetian style.
