Chancery 4o (198 x 143 mm). Collation: A10 B-C8 (A1 blank, A2r table, C8v blank); a-y8 1-68 710 (a1r text, 7/9v colophon, 7/10 table). 260 leaves. 32 lines, and headline. Gothic types 3:150 (head-lines, names of books, first words of sections) and 4:81 (text). Rubricated: Lombard initials and paragraph marks in red. (Outer margin of A1 blank renewed, lower corner of 1/1 neatly trimmed away, 7/1-2 and conjugates 7/9-10 reinserted on tabs, 7/10 chipped at edge, some light marginal dampstaining.) The Mammotrectus, a guide to understanding the text of the Bible, was popular with preachers in the later Middle Ages. It explained difficult words in the Scriptures, both etymologically and grammatically, and provided explanations of the festivals of the Church year, the legends of the saints, and various liturgical texts. Its author, Johannes Marchesinus, was a Franciscan friar from Reggio near Modena. The earliest editions were those of Mainz and Beromünster, each dated 1470.
