Woodcut title of the crucified Christ holding the cross within floral and zoomorphic woodcut border. White-on-black woodcut initials. (a1 title backed with tissue and soiled, and with small filled wormtrack affecting image, first quire with old marginal repairs, a few just touching letters, several other marginal repairs, f1.8 reinforced at fold, some occasional spotting and pale staining.) 18th-century Italian mottled vellum, spine gilt, morocco lettering-pieces, later gilt-lettering added to front cover to denote the ownership of the Royal Library at Parma, edges stained blue; cloth folding case. Provenance: indistinct signature on front flyleaf dated 1736 -- Luigi Razzolini (19th century), editor of literary and liturgical works in Italian, including editions of Bernard and Boccaccio (note on front flyleaf; ?his bookplate) -- Royal Library of Parma (lettering on binding) -- purchased from Joseph Felcone, Princeton, 12 May 1993.

FIRST EDITION. The Dominican Passavanti, prior of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, turned his Lenten sermons of 1354 into the present popular vernacular treatise. The woodcut on the title is that found in Miscomini's Imitazione di Gesù Cristo, 1493, where it lacks the four-side border (also Miscomini's property).
