Lot Essay

A watercolour of an interior at Schloss Dobritschau in Böhmen and dated 1818 shows chairs of this pattern although the watercolour does not show details of the splat. The same overall design appears on a design sheet of 1806 by Gottlieb August Pohle that is now in the Österreichisches Museum für angewandte Kunst, Vienna, drawings collection XVIII d VIII51. Very little is known about Pohle, even whether he was a designer or cabinet-maker.
The Schloss Dobritschau waterclour is illustrated in H. Schmitz, Der Schöne Wohnraum, Berlin, 1930, pl. 120 and in J. Folnesics, Innenrúme und Hausrat, Vienna, 1922, p. 34
