Lot Essay

Although the carving of the reliefs of this box are clearly related to a group of games boxes which are thought to originate from the Upper Rhine region, it is also worth noting that the distinctively carved foot is extremely close to a casket in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, which is catalogued as Flemish, 1430-1460 (Randall, loc.cit.).
