Lot Essay

Pricket candlesticks in the form of knights on horseback and fantastical beasts were common throughout the 12th and 13th centuries (Falke & Meyer, loc. cit.). However, figural and animal candlesticks with long stems terminating in open sockets became increasingly popular in the later middle ages, and were a particular speciality of Dinant.
