Lot Essay

The ascription of the present terracotta model to the circle of Angelo Pio is based on its similarities to several known works, but perhaps most noticeably to the figures of Fortitude and Prudence executed by Pio to adorn a new staircase built in the Casa Gozzadini, Bologna, probably in the late 1720's (Riccòmini, op. cit., figs. 14, 15).
